DESCRIPTION — ROLE

The discovery phase before the big project. Creating an iPad app to help researchers. A specialist in the vivarium visually checks each cell for reproduction to see if childbirth has occurred and enters this data into the system. The task was to, taking into account external factors (work uniform, gloves and noisy environment), offer a simple solution to how to use a voice control system for a tablet application.

Microsoft’s personal productivity assistant Cortana was used as a fundamental technology.

Based on the context of the work, the most difficult parts were worked out: 1) no gestures for the iPad, since people work in several pairs of gloves at the same time; 2) two types of data entry need to be supported — pressing and voice; 3) due to noise in the vivarium rooms, it is necessary to use a headset.

VOICE CONTROL

As a provision for more complex interface solutions, voice cursor control has been added to move it step by step to the desired screen element, and a basic click command.

CONDITIONS

Assistant name is Gemma.
At any time, it's possible to activate assistant and highlight the commands available for voice control. You can also ask to open the sidebar, where all the commands are displayed in a list.

GEMMA

In accordance with the task received, the researcher checks the slots in the selected stand, scans the card of each slot, fills in the data and moves on to the next one.

The visual display of the stand and slots is the same as described in the Genomio.Desktop project for scientists.

SCANNING

The interface where the researcher fills in the date of birth of the offspring the number of living and dead individuals and the cause of death if any. As a result the employee sends the card to print or chooses to postpone the check if the offspring were not born.
